To use a brush in PSP 8 or 9 or X, or XI, it needs to be imported.

1. Download the brush file to your hard drive. It will either have an extension of .jbr or .pspbrush.
2. If it needs unzipping do that.
3. Open PSP, select File>Import>Custom Brush.
A box will open, select open and browse to where you have the brush, select open.
4. The brush(es) will preview on the left and you select the ones you want to import and select add, or select add all to add all.
5. Select okay and they will import to your PSP. They will create their own .pspbrush and .pspscript files to be available as for the brush tool. They will import to your default brush folder, which unless changed on install, it will be the main PSP folder named Brushes or MyPSPFiles Brushes folder.

No need to restart PSP, the imported brush will be available immediately.

To use a brush in PSP 5, 6, or 7.
1. Download the brush file to your hard drive. It will have an extension of .jbr.
2. If it needs unzipping do that.
3. Copy the .jbr file into the folder named Brushes in your PSP folder.

No need to restart PSP, the imported brush will be available immediately, but sometimes closing and reopening PSP is needed.

Creating new brushes:
A brush can be created from any selection on a single raster layer.

PSP 8, 9, X, XI:
1. On the Tool palette, choose a painting tool such as the Paint Brush, Air Brush, or Color Replacer.
2. Modify the settings for the brush in the Tool Options palette.
3. On the Tool Options palette, click the Brush Tip drop-down list . Current brush tips are displayed.
4. Click the Create Brush Tip button , or choose File > Export > Custom Brushes to open the Create Brush Tip dialog.
5. Complete the fields on the Create Brush Tip dialog, and then click OK.
You can now use the new brush with one of the raster painting tools.
If you want to share your new brushes, only share the .pspbrush file, PSP will create a new .pspscript once imported.

To create a brush from a selection:
1. Make a selection of the area you want to convert into a custom brush. The selection must be on a raster layer so if it is not, then in layer palette Merge>Merge Visible.
2. On the Tool palette, choose a raster painting tool such as the Paint Brush, Air Brush, or Color Replacer.
3. On the Tool Options palette, click the Brush Tip drop-down list . Current brush tips are displayed.
4. Click the Create Brush Tip from Selection button . A preview of the new brush appears in the Create Brush Tip from Selection dialog.
5. Enter a name for the brush in the Name field.
6. To set a default step value, select a step value.
7. Click OK, to use the new brush tip with one of the raster painting tools.
If you want to share your new brushes, only share the .pspbrush file, PSP will create a new .pspscript once imported.

PSP 7 or lower:
Create your image like you want it your brush to look, then in your layer palette Merge>Merge Visible, because you need a single raster layer. Go to Selections>Select All, or if you only want a specific part of your image to be the brush, use one of the selection tools (selection, lasso, etc.) to select that specific part. Now click on the brush tool (or tool that uses custom brushes, like the air brush, etc), click on the brush type button, then click Custom.

The Custom Brush dialogue box will popup, then you click Create. (If that button is disabled or grayed out, then you do not have an active selection in the image to create the brush with. Your new brush tip should appear in the preview window. Click OK, and your new brush should be active and ready to paint with. If you have selected Show brush outlines in your preferences, then you will see the outline of the new brush attached to the cursor.

No need to restart PSP, the imported brush will be available immediately, but sometimes closing and reopening PSP is needed.
